Quality Assurance in West Africa

Various institutions in West Africa are currently working towards accreditation and certification to International Standards Organization (ISO) standards such as ISO 17025 and ISO 9000 to demonstrate their institutional commitment to quality assurance.  Currently, the CERES-Locustox Foundation in Dakar, Senegal is certified to ISO 9000.

Improving the Quality of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Horticultural crops play a significant role in human nutrition in West Africa. They have a direct impact because they are consumed locally, and an indirect impact because, as valuable export commodities, they support economic growth and development. Pesticides are one of the many tools used in an integrated pest management (IPM) program for horticultural crops. Used correctly, they can improve crop quality and quantity. However, if used improperly, pesticides pose a danger to human health and the environment and jeopardize income from crop exports. A quality assurance program for horticultural crops in West Africa involves proper pesticide use validated by pesticide residue monitoring. Pesticide safety education is an effective risk mitigation practice because it transmits the knowledge and skills necessary for proper pesticide use and handling. Residue monitoring programs position laboratories in proactive roles confirming that appropriate pesticides are used correctly in horticultural crop production. A quality assurance program is an effective way to assure a healthy food supply, a safe environment, and profitable exports.
